About Karuna Sagari

Bharatanatyam Dancer

Bhakti Natya Niketan, Coimbatore

Karuna Sagari Venkatachalam is a classical Bharatanatyam dancer initially trained by her mother, Dr. Neela Venkatachalam. She graduated with honours from the world-renowned performing arts institution, the Kalakshetra Foundation, Chennai, in 2008. For 10 years, outstanding choreographer, Sheejith Krishna guided her in her pursuit of this dance form and its related specializations. Currently, she is under the mentorship of veteran danseuse, Malavika Sarukkai. She holds a Masters degree in South Asian Studies from the University of Heidelberg, Germany besides a Master Degree in Tamil from Annamalai University.

Mentoring with Karuna

The mentorship program is designed to encompass various modules focusing on both the Nritta and Abhinaya aspects of Bharatanatyam. Each module runs for 3-4 months, with classes being conducted online.  Students are accepted on a rolling basis and each cohort is limited to 3-5 participants to ensure personalized attention and effective learning amongst like-minded peers.

Tour Dates (To be announced)

Hailing from a Tamil family entrenched in Tiruppugazh (Hymns on Lord Muruga) for four generations, Karuna Sagari, Bharatanatyam dancer-choreographer, through her ensemble work, sheds light on the philosophical significance of the Kanda Sashti at Tiruchendur, the shore temple of Muruga on the Bay of Bengal.

The 'Murugan Unarvu' World Tour

The production will tour Malaysia, Singapore, Canada and parts of North America, South Africa, Mauritius and the Reunion Islands, Australia and New Zealand, as well as the United Kingdom and Switzerland beginning in July 2023.
